Daydream Travel Idea #1

Search your favorite INSTAGRAM account, FACEBOOK account, or PINTEREST account for inspiration. I scan social media for pictures of places that speak to me. Absorbing other people’s experiences sometimes can inspire the desire to experience the same thing from your own travel adventure experience. Applying this theory to myself as an example…

Recently, I have found myself fascinated by photos of others enjoying the tranquility and adventure of the SEYCHELLES & MALDIVES. I am truly fascinated by the Maldive Islands as a potential snorkeling adventure. The MALDIVES are an archipelago of 1,192 coral islands grouped into 26 natural coral atolls in the Indian ocean in Asia. Only 200 islands are inhabited. All the islands are encircled by a lagoon of crystal clear water. These islands are protected by a reef structure, housing one of the most exclusive and spectacular underwater life habitats. I KNOW…ASIA! Located not far from there are the Seychelle islands. The SEYCHELLES is an archipelagic island country in the Indian Ocean at the eastern edge of the Somali Sea in Africa. I KNOW…AFRICA!! It consists of 115 islands. Other nearby island countries and territories include the Maldives and Chagos Archipelago to the east.

I am so excited to really begin to gather information and daydream about this possibility someday! Have you traveled there? Any tips to share? Leave a reply at the end of this post!

Daydream Travel Idea #2

Look through photo albums of past trips that you REALLY enjoyed. Does a particular trip stand out to you as an outstanding favorite? GO THERE AGAIN! Create new memories to join the initial amazing memories! Maybe it will become a tradition of sorts!

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK was a place that our family had visited when our boys were younger. We had so much fun that we recreated our trip and did it again when the boys were older! This was a great road trip. Each trip had fabulous family memories that we created together. Our family LOVES A ROAD TRIP! Read about a different ROAD TRIP by clicking this link.

It is nearly 3,500 square miles of wilderness recreation mostly in Wyoming, USA, but also has pieces of Idaho and Montana within its borders too. YELLOWSTONE sits atop a volcanic hot spot. Canyons, rivers, forests, hot springs, and geysers can be found here along with many wilderness animals of the northwest like bear, wolves, bison, elk and antelope.

I urge you to explore here if you have never seen the magnificence of this area! Leave a comment/reply of your experience at the end of this post!

Daydream Travel Idea #3

Is there some place that you’ve ALWAYS wanted to go, but never dared to really investigate what it would take to actually do it? RESEARCH IT! Work from fact, not speculation that you ultimately talk yourself out of the idea before facts are considered! Research recommended accomodations. Contact the travel bureaus or chamber of commerce for the area representing several choices to compare amenities verse your budget.

For me, this would be FIJI. It is on my list as a must do! The snorkeling opportunities that I’ve read about seem so amazing! I certainly WILL be going there at some future point. My family LOVES SNORKELING SPOTS! Click here on SNORKELING SPOTS to read about those adventures! Here is the snorkeling gear we purchased for our family.

Fiji is known as the home to a soft, thriving reef, located around its more than 300 tropical islands. Shallow coral gardens offer many reef fish as well as big marine life. From angelfish, clownfish, butterflyfish to sea turtles, sharks and manta rays. Fiji captures the diversity of adventure for an enthusiastic snorkeler. Where is your destination that you’ve always wanted to travel to see? Leave a comment/reply at the end of this post!

Daydream Travel Idea #4

Listen to your friends and relatives. Absorb their travel opinions. Allow them to regale you with their stories. Has someone inspired you through their experience for you to try a certain travel destination? For me this is the case! Since childhood I have been listening and absorbing these amazing tales from my Aunt and Uncle about their time living in many different locations. One such location that stands out to me is Annette Island, AK. My Uncle sent me five scenic photos taken on Annette Island, Alaska.  Metlakatla is the Indian Village located on the island.

TAMGASS BAY, ANNETTE ISLAND, AK

Tamgass Bay is located on the south end of the Island.  Across the Bay you can see Tamgass Mountain.  The salmon hatchery he managed is located down by the beach directly below the Mountain.

Tamgass Lake is located below Tamgass Mountain.  The lake is a canyon lake about 4 miles long and 350 feet deep.  The lake served as the water source for the hatchery.

PURPLE MOUNTAIN WATERFALL, ANNETTE ISLAND, AK

This is a 1000 foot waterfall coming down from a lake high up on Purple Mountain. The Metlakatla Indian Community gets its domestic water from Purple Lake via a pipeline that comes off the mountain along the falls. The falls empties into Metlakatla Bay on the northwest end of the Island. The village is located on the south shore of the Bay.

Trout Lake is located on the northern portion of the Island.  The outlet of the lake empties into the north end of Metlakatla Bay.  Trout Lake is about 6 miles long and 2 miles wide with a depth of 375 feet.  It is a beautiful postcard type lake.

If my memory serves me right, there are 85 lakes on Annette Island. Ranging from small one acre size up to 600 to 800 surface acres.  Depths from a few feet deep down in the muskeg flats to 475 feet deep in the Mountains.  When we lived in Ketchikan in the 1970’s, I had the pleasure of running the first physical, chemical, and biological studies ever made on Annette Island Lakes.  The high lakes were incredibly beautiful.  Makes you realize just how awesome God’s creation is. ” ~quote from my Uncle.

Let others inspire you to see with your own eyes these amazing sights! Travel! Where do you feel inspired to travel? Leave a comment/reply at the end of this post!

Daydream Travel Idea #5

Does your spouse, travel partner, parent, sibling, or child have someplace that they constantly talk about exploring, but they have never actually realized their dream to go there? Perhaps this travel choice sounds interesting to you, but it’s not a top priority in your travel dreams. WELL, are they important enough to you to help make THEIR dream a reality? Is this person a priority in your world? Encourage the dream and become their travel buddy because it is important to them and they are important to you!

For me, this situation would be all things Alaska for my husband, Galen! From glaciers, to grizzly hunting, to mountain stream fishing, to crabbing, to hiking mountains, to panning for gold…

Okay! So I’m not the biggest fan of being cold in Alaska, or experiencing days with no sunlight or days with no night darkness. I am certainly not interested in grizzly bears, but I am fascinated with majestic mountain wilderness beauty! I’ll take my camera and make that my go-to hobby for the trip! Here is my favorite go-to waterproof camera we use!

I could do this for him, with him! So, maybe I’ll research all things Alaska and come up with a travel plan! Perhaps a cruise? Perhaps a mountain lodge? Perhaps rent an RV and explore… I don’t know yet, but I’m willing to put the research in and daydream for him!

Who are you willing to do this for and where would you go? Leave a reply at the end of this post!

Daydream Travel Idea #6

What is a place that you would love to share with your kids! Look at a vacation through their eyes. Where would they LOVE to go explore?

For our family it was Hawaii! My husband and I love Kauai, Hawaii, USA. We traveled there twice before surprising our boys with a Christmas gift including luggage filled with vacation clothes, beach activities, and tickets to Hawaii with us as their tour guides. Here is the luggage we recommend!

Daydream Travel Idea #7

Is there some “waaaaay-far outside of the box” place that would REALLY blow your budget, but you are so over-the-moon with the idea as a TOTAL FANTASY to explore? GO BIG HERE! Plan it out! DREAM BIG! It’s fun to DAYDREAM! You never know…maybe someday!

Crete Island or Santorini Island, GREECE, or somewhere on the AMALFI coast of ITALY, both countries sound and look like dreams come true.

Let’s compare the amazingness of my DAYDREAM CHOICES:

CRETE ISLAND, GREECE is the 5th largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is located approximately 100 miles south of mainland Greece. It is mountainous east to west. The language spoken here is Greek. Interestingly, the climate is rather mild here with average highs 55-85 degrees Celcius with seasonally warmer temperatures during summer months of May through October in the 70+ degrees. The economy of Crete relies heavily on tourism. Tourists are interested in the ruins and archeological sites that previous cultures of the Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman, Cretan cultures left as remnant evidence of their presence here. Agriculture and stock breeding is present on the island today. The main crops are avocado, olives, oranges, and specialty cheeses. The service and tourism industry remains the largest economy booster to this island.

SANTORINI ISLAND, GREECE whose name derives from (my Mom’s name) Saint Irene (the contraction of the name is where Santorini derives from) is located directly north of Crete, but approximately 120 miles southeast of mainland Greece in the a regional group of islands called the Cyclades. Santorini has a rich history. Click on the link to read about hypothesis speculation linking Atlantis to have originated in the same location as Santorini Island. Kind of cool trivia! This area has rich biblical history, also. The Roman influences are prevalent. The economy of Santorini relies heavily on tourism as it is highly desired vacation location. Agriculture on the island is present on this post-volcanic soil. The main crop is grapes to make the famous Santorini wine. Limited rainfall here makes fresh water a scarcity, yet is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world with the idyllic traditional low-lying cubical houses made of local whitewashed stone. The house is dug sideways or downwards into the surrounding pumice. These rooms are prized because of the high insulation provided by the air-filled pumice, and are used as living quarters of unique coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter. The culture is very romantic and quaint.

AMALFI COAST, ITALY is a stretch of coastline on the steep southern shore of Italy. It has warm summers and mild winters. Their economy is know for the production of lemons (Limoncello liqueur) and specialty anchovies. This highly sought after idyllic vacation spot has shorelines dotted with traditional southern Italian homes located in the steep hillsides as viewed from the coast. It is a beautiful location to explore and discover amazing restaurants. Let’s not forget the wine and food of Italy!

This stretch of mountainous coast sits in-between Naples and Salerno and encompasses the arm of the Sorrento Peninsula. The coastline includes towns settled in the mountains providing jaw-dropping scenery filled with beaches, coastal walks and mountainside villas.

ALL three ideas are BIG DREAMS! That’s okay! All realities began as dreams! Go for it! Leave a reply below what your BIG DREAM Inspirational Travel Adventure is going to be!

Great post! It’s good to get people’s mind off the current world health situation even for a bit to read about and dream about potential trips. As I think about international destinations for my wife and I, it’s so hard to pick a couple because there are so many beautiful places. You don’t make that job any easier with your peeks at several of them. I love Alaska. Your pictures and descriptions are great. I hope to get a chance to go back again. My last trip was to Sitka but it was a business trip. Did have a day to explore. The Alaska panhandle islands are great places to visit as well.

Since National Parks in general are on my bucket list, I especially enjoyed your article on Yellowstone. Made it to Glacier last year so have Yellowstone and the Utah parks high on our list. Thanks for all the ideas and for creating dreams!

  • Tara Hallie

These are all really great ways to think about the next great adventure! I like using Pinterest, FB and IG to look at dreamy photos. I’m super visual so seeing these places really helps me narrow down where I want to go next!

  • Erica Bianco Ellis

Yes! I daydream of places I’ve been, but then again I want to discover new travel. I HAVE to visit Positano again where we were married, but yet I’ve never been to so many other countries. The list is long and I can’t wait to start traveling again. Thanks for the inspiration!

    • Barbara

Stay tuned, I’m actually working on another blog post to detail our entire road trip looping from Michigan to YELLOWSTONE and back hitting every possible national park along the way! It was fun! Glad you enjoyed it!

  • Ellie Criscitello

This post is so detailed and informative! It honestly made me feel better just reading it. After being cooped up for so long, it’s nice to think about getting out there and experiencing a new and exciting place.

  • T

Great article! I love researching different places to visit and of course daydreaming about travel. I’m loving some of your tips here 🥰 Plus a few of the places you have been are on my bucket list!

  • Leah

Such a fun blog! I recently read a book set in Sweden and kept looking up different cities and landmarks mentioned, and now am dying to go there. This post got me thinking of other fun ways to build my travel bucket list!

    • Barbara

I know what you mean…the more I learn about the MALDIVES…the more I am determined to have an adventure there! Thanks for the feedback and positivity!

  • Cindy

We went to Yellowstone last year, and it was one of the best vacations. I took that same picture of the Upper Falls. On my bucket list: Hawaii and Alaska. Great ideas!

    • Barbara

We enjoyed that experience so much we re-created the trip a second time as our children grew older! It is a magical place for us with great memories! Thanks for the feedback!

  • Virginia Legros

I love idea #3 the most, although they are all good.. My home is on week 5 of lockdown and as a traveler I am starting to feel it. We are planning a trip to the mountains, where we can be away from home but secluded and dont see anyone! Thanks for the ideas!!

  • Suzanne

This is great! I’m trying to stay positive while waiting out Covid-19. My Holland/Belgium trip was postponed, but the Baltics are coming up in August – fingers crossed!

  • Cathy

Great ideas! I love the idea of planning a “dream” vacation, my husband really wants to go to Hawaii so I think that is a good place to start! Thanks for the ideas!

  • Gabe

I’m going to daydream our trip to Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics!!! We’ve been dreaming of this as a family for years. My oldest is an elite gymnast and will have his crack at the 2028 Olympics, so we want to experience one together. We want to take the time to visit Germany where our foreign exchange student from this year is from while we’re in Europe! I think we’ll start making plans so we can daydream!!! Love it!

  • Lisa

This post is amazing! Daydreaming is a great way to get your mind off of things. I lived in Alaska for 8 years and love to daydream about the places that I never visited.

  • Jean

Thank you for your post. I enjoyed reading about the places you have visited and the ones of which you are day dreaming about taking. Being sheltered-in-place, I miss the excursions, road trips and field trips that I so love to take. Your ideas have me ready to go and this time probably more prepared than my usual spontaneous trips.

  • Lori Ann

As a travel agent (albeit an unemployed one) I studied some great locations, so I love this list! I think I’m going to look at researching our bigger Caribbean trip – Turks and Caicos and Grenada are high on my list! Since they are in different parts of the Caribbean, they would require some extra planning to make it all happen in one trip if we chose to do a cruise. Thanks for the inspiration!

    • Barbara

Turks and Caicos and Grenada sound fascinating! Loop me n on what you research, I’m interested in a Southern Caribbean cruise!! Thanks for the feedback!

  • Angie Heusser

This is such a great post and idea! I love the idea of daydreaming, virtually visiting and making plans once we are out of this stay at home crisis. Very uplifting and inspirational! Thank You!!

  • Linda White

I love this post, especially the Bucket List Daydream. I want to go to Hawaii, which I thought we could maybe do this year! LOL! So now I’ve decided we are going for our 50th wedding anniversary, hopefully my husband will agree. Or I’ll go a different date with some of my kids. LOL! All of your ways to dream about travel are excellent.

  • Lisa

Great inspiration here. I really like the idea of looking back through photos of past trips. Not only does it bring up good, happy memories and feelings, it is also a great idea to start planning a return trip to a favorite location. It’s also a great idea to make a BIG plan for something that seems out of reach – it’s the first step to making it happen. 🙂

  • Taylor

This is a great post! I love thinking about our future trips and I’ve definitely been going back through my favorite images. A lot of our travel is inspired by places our family members visit. When people light up about their travels, I immediately start looking into the location. Thanks for a fun post that inspired me!

  • Charlene

We share some of the same adventure ideas! I’ll be checking Yellowstone off my list later this summer, followed by Hawaii in April and Alaska next summer!

  • Lisa Manderino

I love this world we live in. There are so many places to see and explore. My dream is Bora Bora which I booked for January. I hope we get to go! I want to take my kids to Europe and Hawaii before they are grown.

  • Marianne

So many great ideas! Been keeping my eye on the Maldives as well! As for Hawaii… we were booked to go this November. The trip hasn’t been cancelled yet, but I’m sure it will have to be postponed til next year 😞

  • Tiffany

I love getting “lost” in travel dreams! We have all been spending time thinking about where we would love to go!

  • Sara

I spend way too much time compiling information on places that I want to visit someday. There are just too many amazing places to see. When I sit down to actually plan a trip I have a hard time narrowing down what specific attractions/locations we are going to visit at each destination.

  • Eva Keller

Great ideas! Whenever I have an idea for a destination for a trip I always start with following any relevant Instagram accounts. Most places have tourism boards so that is helpful, but I also like to check out who all they are following because it is usually businesses local to that area. I always want to make sure I find out every cool place to go so I don’t miss anything.

  • Charlotte

I’ve been looking at a Yellowstone trip for awhile now. My daughter has also asked about going to China. She is 5. Maybe in a few years we can make both of these happen.

  • Jan

Great post with lots of daydream material! 👍🏻 I’ve been to the Maldives 3 times and could offer you some tips when you start planning! It is by far the best place I’ve snorkelled in the world! 🐠😍

  • Amanda

Great post! I think half the fun of a trip is in the planning! I never give myself persmission to plan unless we are actually going, but it would be super fun to research, imagine, and daydream some of the trips out!

  • Keirsten

Great travel inspiration ideas. My husband and I have been talking about where we want to go on our first trip back into the world and it seems your tip #2 is where we’re thinking… some place we’ve already been but we always have an amazing time when we go. Turks & Caicos, here we come, but hopefully sooner than later 🤪

  • Alicia

I find myself daydreaming about possible locations all of the time. My husband and I love to travel and can’t wait to see the world together! I would love to go to Greece or the Savannah, while my husband would love to go to Iceland or Australia.
