Summer travel is so amazing! What is your SUMMER TRAVEL BUCKET LIST? All winter we look forward to summer and all the things we LOVE to do in the summer. Where we want to travel and what we want to do when we get there! Where are your favorite places to travel in the summer? What are your favorite things to do when the sun is shining and the warm temperatures are calling? Here are 7 WAYS TO DAYDREAM TRAVEL ADVENTURE.
I live surrounded by freshwater lakes, so our summer involves trips to cool off in the water usually. We enjoy camping, water sports, bon fires, picnics and everything that goes along with those things. What are your favorites? How do you enjoy summer? Here are 5 WAYS TO ENJOY SUMMER!
CAMPING CRAZY FUN
Each summer usually right after school lets out, a group of families from our community set aside a week or so to bond together camping and celebrating the end of the school year and the kick-off to our amazing Northern Michigan (lower peninsula) summer! The area we call home is a tourist destination. So, carving time out of our hectic schedules here, for ourselves, is precious! This camping excursion has grown, evolved, and improved in all ways. From menu planning to entertainment and activities, to a more rustic setting, a private location with rural accommodations. It is an ever-evolving week of laughter, community, and fun!
CAMPING CRAZY FUN – NOT REALLY ABOUT CAMPING

The majesty of a rural countryside…quiet, peaceful, tranquil…yet, wildly untamed, untrimmed, unmanicured…REAL! Life in nature is just that and more! Explore your local countryside and locate your slice of peace! We do and then we create FUN!
On hot, humid, summer days sometimes the only way to beat the heat, to cool off, is to find a breeze and some shade! Locate the biggest coolest tree then go from there! Find a secluded location away from civilization and begin planning!

CAMPING CRAZY FUN – BOND AROUND A BONFIRE

Did you remember to pick up ingredients for s’mores when you stopped at the grocery store? You will wish you had remembered when you are snuggled up to a bonfire!
Evenings in Michigan can cool down, hammocking out for an evening and cooking over a bonfire in the woods by a stream with the call of wildlife can be just as enjoyable! We enjoy making packet dinners in foil and roasting our favorite meat and veggies for dinner.
Inviting pals to join in the fun is even better! Michigan weather is so temperamental. It can be 80 degrees during the heat of the day and cool down to 50-60 degrees at night in July. There is a phrase in Michigan that is common, “Wait ten minutes and the weather will dramatically change!” It is so true!
When is the last time you had a campfire with friends and made dinner roasting over the fire on a cool summer evening…try it! Somehow food tastes better when prepared and eaten outside! It is a great change of routine and fun!!
CAMPING CRAZY FUN – WATCHING KIDS MATURE

This group of families that we share outdoor camping experiences with has been gathering for this annual tradition for many years. It is so much fun to see how everyone’s children are growing and maturing right in front of our eyes.
Annually, during this time, we get the updates on how was the school year? Where is life taking you? What is the next step towards your goals? Where are you living now? Etc., etc… It is so wonderful to observe all these changes and circle these young adults with unwavering support. So many amazing kids here! Several of the families that we camp with had senior high school students graduating this year…this dimension added so much fun to the 2021 camping experience.
It is such a joy to watch these kids enjoy each other and renew friendships each summer. The younger one’s look admiringly up to the older ones. The example that the older one’s set as role models is priceless. Each of these families should be so proud of the wonderful human beings they have raised that will become great contributing members of society. Hopefully, they too one day, will become part of their own supportive group of their own families like how they were socialized as children here in this environment.
Set up dinner outside! When the summer evening is warm and beautiful, don’t eat inside. Travel with that dinner out to a patio or take the dining room table outside! Soak up the rays and enjoy a fabulous meal in the pleasure and enjoyment of your beautiful backyards in the fresh air!

CAMPING CRAZY FUN – SHARING RECIPE’S & BBQ SECRETS

One of the best parts of camping with many families are the evening meals! Everyone brings something to share. THAT means lots of new dishes to try! The above recipe was such a hit with the group that I had to share it!
From smoking an entire pig to roasting chickens, grilling hamburgers to grilling bacon, smoking pork loins to smoking chicken wings, and I cannot forget to mention the SHRIMP BOIL. This week was a carnivores feast! WOW! So many great smells came from the BBQ’s area! All year long our HEAD CHEF dreams up new menus with gusto! He is a marvel. Just don’t sit in his chair around camp and he is content! He is a wonderful man with a big heart! We love him dearly!
The men tend to group around the BBQ area and nibble as they cook ensuring perfection. It is priceless bonding time! Strong men require strong supportive bonds with each other. Rustic camping provides this perfect opportunity for male bonding over the grill. Friendships are sealed and stories are swapped.
CAMPING CRAZY FUN – CAMPING WITH PALS IN A REMOTE AREA

We have so much fun with our group remote camping! This year a regulation volleyball court complete with sand was added. Much fun was had by all. The group even had an adults versus kids match! Yes, the adults won!
From tiki torches to solar torch lamps this glowing camping area is magically lit to ensure safe fun is had by all!
CAMPING CRAZY FUN – HOMEMADE ENTERTAINMENT FUN

The ATV’s seemed pretty popular for the teens and twenty year old group! Lots of trails and dirt riding were enjoyed by all. I don’t even want to know how much gasoline was consumed in a weeks worth of entertainment for many, many riders.

After getting really dirty, the homemade slip and slide was a great way to get clean. We have some very creative participants that come up with innovative entertainments for the kids!
We are not far from Lake Charlevoix or Walloon Lake, so a dip in the lake to wash off is not a problem either!

One of the most wonderful aspects of creating homemade fun, is the building of community that corresponds. Many different people with many different occupations, from many different backgrounds come together with a common goal of relaxing, enjoying, taking a breath from daily stresses, and simply enjoy each other for a brief break of time. It is simple, yet extraordinary to be apart of this diverse group of families!
Bonds form. Relationships develop. Joy is shared. Participation builds mutual enjoyment for all.

Gaze at a night sky twinkling with stars! I am always amazed – that I am amazed at this sight!
A warm breeze, after a hot summer day, followed by a cool evening filled with the brilliance of the night sky screams for a hammock to gently swing in while pondering the vastness of the universe! If you are lucky, a shooting star will honor you by allowing you to observe it’s streak across the sky as it dies a slow death out in the galaxy.

We love camping in the summer!! Last year we rented an RV for a road trip and went with the dogs and stayed at a new campground every night! We didn’t forget our smores ingredients, and it was a great way to explore different types of campgrounds! Camping really is an amazing experience for the whole family.

Sounds like great times! My friend in PA cooks most of his family’s meals on a wood fire in his giant, beautiful backyard most nights – he started doing it this winter during the times of Covid, for when his extended family came for supper. This spring and summer, we have just stayed out there after our delicious dinner (trout we just caught, sometimes), enjoying the fire, chatting, playing music, etc.
…and that’s likely as close to camping as I’ll get, nowadays!

During COVID our “group” was allowed to bon fire, outside, 6′ apart during N. MI Winter… THAT’S dedication! We are blessed with a fabulous group of families that bond and support one another!
